Double-clicking a file opens something else

Another app has claimed .md files. Right-click the file in Finder, choose Get Info, pick markdown.md under “Open with”, and click “Change All”.

I have a new Mac and want the app back

Open the Mac App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, and download it again from your purchases. You are not charged twice: the purchase belongs to your Apple Account, not to the machine.

The Word file doesn't look right

Send the .md file along with your message. Markdown has a lot of dialects, and seeing the original is the fastest way to find out what happened.
